Annual Report for 2007 2008 marks the fifth year of operation for the New Yorkers for Better Libraries Political Action Committee. Once again, we are encouraging members of the library community to continue its support of our work. Please allow us the opportunity to provide a brief report of our 2007 activities: During the year, we maintained our registration with the New York State Board of Elections and filed eight detailed reports, reworked our web site, began accepting credit card contributions, made four presentations to groups to explain what our PAC is, and published two articles about NYLIBS-PAC. During the year, we held our first annual Fundraising Gala in Albany, and received an extremely generous contribution from the Public Library Directors Association of Suffolk County. Our mission is to provide financial support to legislators and candidates for state office who are in a position to effectively champion libraries. In 2007, we contributed $8300 to eleven campaign committees. These contributions have brought us access to decision-makers and have signaled a seriousness of intent within the library community. In 2008, we intend to continue to focus contributions on the leadership in the Assembly and Senate, and we will also contribute to legislators who were of the greatest help in gaining an additional $22 million of state aid last spring. From an original handful, we have built a core of contributors that now numbers more than 200. We have set a membership goal of 300 contributors and a financial goal of $15,000 in annual individual contributions. We believe our PAC initiatives have to be consistent and long term before results are seen, and are hopeful that you agree that we have to be in this for the long haul. Please write that check today!
